Fantasy Creative Writing Scholarships

Scholarships for higher education are available to students who plan to pursue specific fields of interest, including creative or fantasy writing. Up-and-coming and already established fantasy writers can apply for scholarships to attend creative writing workshops and post-secondary educational programs. Writers interested in writing in a specific genre such as fantasy, as well as those in the creative writing field, can apply for scholarship strictly based on fantasy writing.

  1. Clarion Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers' Workshop

    • The Clarion Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers' Workshop offers student scholarships based on the merits of the applicant, as well as financial need. Funds for the scholarship are provided primarily by the University of California San Diego and the Clarion Foundation, and, as of January 2011, awards range from $100 more than $3,000; however, typically the scholarship amounts are between $500 and $1,500.

    Scholastic Art & Writing Awards

    • The Alliance for Young Artists and Writers sponsors the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, which are designed to acknowledge and reward teens who display outstanding talent in writing or art. The AYAW presents the work of several winners to large audiences, first regionally then on the national level for regional winners. Submitted work for consideration may include fantasy, science fiction, poetry, short story, persuasive writing, humor and more. In 2011, the program will highlight the work of more than 50,000 students nationwide, and of those 1,300 students will receive national awards. The national award winners are then narrowed to 15 graduating seniors who receive a $10,000 scholarship, while an additional 30 students are chosen to receive $1,000 scholarships.

The Writers of the Future Contest

    • Created by L. Ron Hubbard in 1983, the "Writers Award Contest" is a competition designed to discover talented unpublished authors in the field of speculative fiction and fantasy. As of January 2011, The Writers of the Future Contest chooses winners every three months, with prizes ranging from $500 to $1,000, and an annual winner is chosen to receive an additional $5,000. The contest is open to new and amateur fantasy and speculative fiction writers only.

University of Louisville Creative Writing Scholarship

    • The University of Louisville offers current students the opportunity to compete for a creative writing scholarship each year. The scholarship contest is open to all students, both undergraduate and graduate students may apply, and students are not required to be an English major. The amount of the creative writing scholarship varies annually, but is disbursed through a tuition reimbursement.

Interested students should submit a cover letter including all contact information, date of birth, level in school, list of creative writing courses taken including the instructor's name. Also required is a writing sample that may include one or two short stores, or five to 10 poems, in addition to a letter of recommendation from a class instructor.
