Scholarships Based on Academic Merit
A scholarship based on academic merit will be awarded on the basis of your grades in high school. Both grade point average (GPA) and SAT or ACT scores will be considered. Additional academic merit-based scholarships are awarded to those who have since performed well while in college. Scholarships based on academic merit vary in amount and purpose but often pay for all of your tuition expenses.

The Rhodes Scholarship

The Rhodes Scholarship is awarded to Americans of outstanding academic excellence who wish to attend the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom on exchange. It is aimed to further a student's understanding of international relations and peace. Each state of the United States is allocated an equal number of scholarships; however, only 32 students are chosen each year. Intellectual distinction and personal character are the principal criteria for selection. The scholarship lasts for two to three years and includes tuition at Oxford plus living expenses.
The Fulbright Scholarship
-
The Fulbright Scholarship awards American graduates and graduate students with research projects overseas. Funded by the U.S. State Department, it is designed to develop a mutual understanding between the student and his surrounding cultures. Any discipline is acceptable to gain funding, and research is often carried out with a host university or institution overseas. Selection is highly competitive, and applications are normally processed through your university's Fulbright Program Adviser. In addition to a strong academic record, you must also abide by the host country's requirements, such as language fluency.
