Games for a Kid's Play Day
If your children have a play day coming up, it's a good idea to offer structured play. This can include playing make-believe or telling stories, but it can also involve playing games. Use a variety of games to engage all children in play time.
-
Dodgeball
-
A classic game that can be played by a group of kids, about 10 to 19 in an enclosed backyard. It's played with about 15 soft playground balls with the kids broken up into two teams standing opposite each other. The balls are lined up in the middle of the play area. When told "Go," each kid will run to the balls to grab one. The two teams toss the balls at each other. If you're hit or miss a catch, then you're out. The team left standing is the winner.
Guess the Picture
-
One person will obtain or make a list of words and phrases, becoming the game master. Separate the kids into groups of four. Each group will pick one kid from the group to be the drawer for that round. Each drawer is given the word or phrase from the game master and returns to their group. Drawers draw out the word or phrase without using letters, symbols or numbers. The first group to guess and yell out the word or phrase correctly wins a point. The first team to win 10 points wins the game. After each round, rotate the drawer job through the group.

Balloon Stomp
-
This game can be played indoors or outside. You need more than 40 balloons of three colors and yarn. Have the kids break up into three teams. Each team receives one color of balloon, two balloons per kid. Have the kids blow up the balloons and tie them to each foot with a foot of yarn. When the game starts, each team attempts to stomp on the other team's balloons. If both balloons tied to one kid are popped, the child is out of the game. This continues until one team is left standing.
Egyptian War
-
This simple card game, played much like slapjack, can be played by four to six kids. One kid starts as the dealer. The dealer shuffles the deck of cards and then deals the cards to each player, face-down in a clockwise manner. The first player (Player A) is to the left of the dealer. He flips his first card up in the middle of the table. If the card is a number card, move to the next player (Player B). If it's a royal card, as in jack, queen, king or an ace, the next player (Player B) has a set amount of chances to show his royal cards. If a jack is showing, Player B has one chance to show his royal card. If a queen, he has two chances. If it's a king, he gets three chances. Aces bring four chances. If Player B can show a royal card, he collects the stack of cards. This continues until one player has collected all the cards.
