Mario and Luigi Games for Kids

The Italian brothers Mario and Luigi were first paired together in the arcade classic "Mario Bros." Since then, these characters have appeared in many best-selling games for a variety of Nintendo consoles. There are several titles available that are appropriate for players of all ages, including role-playing games and standard side-scrolling games.

  1. Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga

    • A witch steals Princess Peach's voice in "Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga" for the Game Boy Advance, and it's up to the plumbers to get it back. You'll switch between Mario and Luigi as you battle a number of enemies in reflex-based fights, and you'll pair the two together to use super moves. Each of the brothers can learn new abilities and collect useful items for the quest. The game has many puzzles to solve and sections of platforming action. The action and graphics suit younger children, as the game focuses on exploration rather than difficulty.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story

    • This 2009 game for the Nintendo DS takes place in an odd environment -- inside Bowser, the arch-nemesis of the Mario brothers. Bowser is tricked into digesting a magic mushroom, which causes the fire-breathing lizard to begin inhaling all the objects around him, including the titular heroes and Princess Peach. The brothers must explore the insides of Bowser to find the princess and make their escape. This game features a mix of platforming and role-playing action that isn't too hard for younger kids.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

    • This 1996 Super Nintendo title can be downloaded from the Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console service for a fee. An evil alien named Smithy has descended upon the Mushroom Kingdom, crashing into Star Road and causing seven stars to scatter around the world. Mario, Luigi and many other familiar characters must explore the world and recover the stars before traveling to Bowser's castle for an epic fight against Smithy. You'll use a variety of physical attacks and magic spells in turn-based battles against foes. Children will have fun trying different combinations of comical attacks to defeat the enemies in this title.

    Super Mario Bros.

    • The classic title that launched with the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985 is available in many game collections and on the Wii's Virtual Console. Two players take control of Mario and Luigi and alternate playing through a variety of stages across eight worlds. At the end of each, you must traverse a treacherous castle, and you'll finally save Princess Toadstool if you can defeat Bowser in the final level. The violence in this classic consists of little more than stomping Goombas and hitting Koopas with fireballs, making it appropriate for the younger set.
