Scholarship money can help students fill the gaps between financial aid and expenses.

Black journalists in need of assistance with paying for college can apply for a variety of different scholarships. Journalism students who plan to pursue careers in broadcast, print or other media forms can apply for assistance. Scholarship funds are used to cover expenses such as books, tuition and fees.

  1. Visual Task Force Scholarship

    • Black visual journalism students who are currently attending a four-year accredited college can apply for financial assistance from the Visual Task Force Scholarship, sponsored through the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ). As of the 2009-2010 academic school year, the program awards up to $125 to two select students who meet or exceed the 2.75 grade point average requirement. Students must be a student member of the NABJ to apply.

    Larry Whiteside Scholarship

    • The Larry Whiteside Scholarship provides financial assistance to a black student pursuing a career in sports journalism. As of the 2009-2010 school year, the scholarship awarded $2,500 to one select student. Sponsored by the National Association of Black Journalists, the scholarship is only open to students who are student members.

      Students must meet or exceed a 2.5 grade point average requirement to apply for the award. Those working at an on-campus or off-campus media outlet are eligible.

    Allison E. Fisher Scholarship

    • The Allison E. Fisher Scholarship is open to black students who are majoring in journalism or a related field at an accredited four-year university. Related fields include photography, radio or television. As of the 2009-2010 academic school year, one scholarship of $2,500 is awarded to a select student.

      Applicants must meet or exceed a 3.0 grade point average requirement to apply and must be a student member of the National Association of Black Journalists.

    Carole Simpson Scholarship

    • The Carole Simpson Scholarship is available for journalism students who are college sophomores, juniors or seniors planning to pursue a career in broadcast journalism. As of the 2009-2010 school year, the scholarship awards $2,000 to one select student.

      The scholarship is sponsored by the Radio and Television News Directors Foundation. During the selection process, a student's determination and ambition are considered.
