Types of Toy Haulers

The entrance for your toy can be on the side or back of the trailer.

A toy hauler is a trailer designed to provide transport for a "toy" such as a car, motorcycle (two wheels) or quad motorcycle (four wheels), as well as living quarters. Toy haulers can be placed in four categories, with only the most expensive -- the motor home -- able to move from place to place on its own. For each of the other three, you need a vehicle capable of towing its weight.

  1. Tent Trailers

    • The tent trailer is a combination of a trailer and a tent. Its length is divided in two, one half holding the collapsible tent and the other serving as an open space to haul your toy. Tent trailers are entry level toy haulers, with a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $5,000 as of January 2011. Since it is a tent, this category of hauler is not adaptable for winter use. The tent trailer can usually transport two motorcycles or one quad when the tent is folded. Most models have the tent expand over the full length of the trailer when set up, so the toy cannot be stored on the trailer during this time. Because of its size and lower weight, a mid-size vehicle can tow this hauler.

    Travel Trailers

    • Travel haulers, also known as travel trailers, are the cheapest hard trailer options for toy hauling. Priced from $15,000 to $25,000, travel trailers are fully enclosed with a rear or side door to load your toy. These haulers weigh 8,000 to 10,000 lbs. and require a truck with a towing capacity of 10,000 to 15,000 lbs. The trailer hooks up to the towing rig using a regular back hitch. There is no physical separation between the toy storage area and the living area. Travel trailers can have one pop out or section of the trailer frame that expands to the outside, increasing the living space.

    5th wheel

    • The 5th wheel is a larger version of the travel trailer. Apart from the size and the amenities present in the living area, such as high-end furniture, kitchen fixtures, electronics and up to three pop outs, the 5th wheel has the advantage of a hauling area separated from the living area by a wall. Toys can easily be stored inside without fear dirtying or imparting the smell of gas to your living area. This toy hauler weighs up to 17,000 lbs. and requires a large towing rig equipped with a 5th wheel hitch. These haulers are priced from $30,000 to $60,000.

    Motor home

    • The motor home combines the size and amenities of the 5th wheeler with an even larger living area. Motor homes are essentially big buses with a dedicated living space and hauling section. They can have up to three pop outs. The main advantage of the motor home is its ability to tow a smaller car behind it to use for local travel along your route. Motor homes can cost over $250,000.
