What Types of Jobs Can You Get With an Accounting Degree?

There are a variety of different entry level accounting and bookkeeping jobs that individuals with accounting degrees can obtain. Moreover, these types of jobs can provide individuals with an opportunity to gain valuable experience and become promoted to a higher level accounting position. Graduates from accounting degree programs from colleges and universities, including 2 and 4 year degree programs, have a greater opportunity to obtain accounting positions rather than non college graduates.

Public Accountant

Public accountants perform bookkeeping, tax accounting, consulting and auditing work. Many entry level public accountants may provide assistance to more experienced public accountants. Certified Public Accountants (CPA) possess a CPA license. They acquire this certification by passing the Uniform Certified Public Accounting Examination. This exam, which is used by all state authorities, is administered by the National Association of State Board of Accountancy.

Management Accountant

Management accountants assist companies with their financial business decisions. They record and analyze a company's financial records and prepare financial statements, such as balance sheets and income statements. Most employers hire management accountants who possess a bachelor's or master's degree in accounting.

Internal Auditor

Internal auditors verify the accuracy of financial records. They oversee the organizational financial business activities and ensure that the information conforms to company policies and applicable laws and regulations. Individuals with a bachelor's degree in accounting qualify for an internal auditor position.

Government Accountant

Government accountants analyze the financial records of government agencies and perform audits of private businesses. They ensure that the financial data is in compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Government accountants have a background in accounting, and many possess a bachelor's or master's degree in accounting. Additionally, some government accountants may work for government agencies, such as the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) or the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI).

Employment and Salary

Most accounting positions require individuals to have a bachelor's or a master's degree in accounting or related field, and some junior level accounting positions may only require individuals to possess an associate's degree in accounting. As a whole, individuals who possess a strong background in accounting qualify for many accounting job positions. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2008, 1.3 million jobs were held by accountants and auditors. Additionally, the job opportunities for accountants are expected to increase by 22% between 2008 and 2018. The Bureau of Labor Statistics also states that the median annual salary for accountants and auditors in 2008 were $59,430.
