Alchemy fascinates a large number of people because of its elements of both science and magic. Mainstream pop culture like "Fullmetal Alchemist" and the "Harry Potter" series have brought alchemy directly into people's living rooms. With an expanding interest in alchemy, the next natural step seems to be creating games with alchemy as a premise. Although some of these games require purchase, several are available free.

From the gaming company PopCap Games comes the game "Alchemy." PopCap's "Alchemy" comes in a free browser-based version and a downloadable full edition of the game for the computer or Windows Mobile devices. The Web-based application features three skill levels to play. In the game, you must change the board to solid gold by placing symbols around. The symbols must match according to their color or symbol. If you receive a piece that you can't place, it can be discarded, but you can only discard three in a row before receiving a "game over" notice. The full edition of the game costs $14.95 as of January 2011 and unlocks a saving ability and removes advertisements.

Andrey Zaikin's "Alchemy" for Android phones rates as one of the better-known free alchemy games on Android with more than 250,000 downloads, according to AppBrain. "Alchemy" offers the capability to create 360 combinations of items. The game begins with the four basic elements of water, earth, air and fire. Using these four, you create combinations from simple items like a tree or swamp to ectoplasm and Totoro. For $4.95 as of January 2011, you can purchase a premium key to remove ads, enable an undo feature and receive hints.

Alchemy for iPhone

If your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch runs iOS 3.0 or higher, you can play the free Alchemy app. This app, developed by Denis Butyletskiy, allows you to combine certain elements with others to create new objects. You can create objects like alcohol, rice, artificial intelligence and acid rain. The goal of the game is to ultimately create gold and become the most powerful alchemist around.

Created by developer Badim for Armor Games, "Doodle God" may be one of the more well-known free alchemy games. "Doodle God" begins with four basic elements: earth, air, fire and water. From these four elements, you create dozens of others by combining things. The game features 115 possible elements in 14 categories. With each correct match, you receive points and a relevant quote. Hints can be used every few seconds as needed. In addition to a free Web-based version, "Doodle God" can be downloaded for the iPhone; however, this version costs $0.99 in 2011.
Mah Jongg: Age of Alchemy

Those familiar with mah jongg will have no problem delving into "Mah Jongg: Age of Alchemy." In this game, you match two free tiles to remove them. Rather than tiles being decorated with standard characters, the tiles in this game display alchemy symbols. You have seven minutes to score as many points as you can before time runs out.
Alchemy Genetics

Creative Mobile designed an alchemy game for Android phones with a slightly different twist. Rather than combining elements like water or clay, "Alchemy Genetics" has you create new animals from four base animals. Starting with an ant, rat, chicken and anchovy, you create all kinds of creatures, such as a scorpion fish or a gargoyle. The game features 200 possible combinations of animals.
