School Fundraisers That Benefit Businesses

When it's time to organize a fundraiser for a school's sports teams, academic clubs, library, field trips or other needs, many parent groups choose activities that not only benefit the school but also local business. These types of fundraisers appeal to parents who like to support local businesses and also develop partnerships between the school and the community.

  1. Restaurant Fundraisers

    • Partner with a local restaurant. For this fundraiser, the restaurant agrees to donate a percentage of diners' bills to the school. Often, the event occurs on a specific night, and patrons must present a flier that mentions the fundraiser in order to have a percentage of their bill donated. Some restaurants also give diners discounts. For example, a restaurant could agree to give people who come in for the school fundraiser a 10 percent discount, plus donate 15 percent of the bill to the school. The advantage for the restaurant is community goodwill and a chance to recruit new patrons.

    Advertising Revenue

    • A fundraiser could involve selling advertising space in a school bulletin, newspaper or sports program. Businesses benefit from increased exposure to students, their parents and other community members who see the ads. Some ads might simply state that the business supports the school. Or a business might include coupons in its advertisements to increase patronage.

    Discount Cards

    • Students or families can sell discount cards to parents, other relatives and neighbors. Discount cards typically list at least a dozen discounts available at local businesses. The proceeds from the card sales go directly to the school, while the businesses might entice customers who might not have made purchases without a special discount.

    Team Sponsorships

    • Whether the team is academic or athletic, the students involved can ask local businesses to become sponsors. The business sponsorship money can pay for equipment and travel expenses for the team. In return, the team can put the business name and logo on uniforms or programs and give the business a team photo and plaque to display. The business stands to gain community esteem because of its support.
