The PlayStation 3 (PS3) is a multimedia powerhouse. The PS3 gives users the ability to play video games, Blu-Ray discs, DVDs and CDs. PS3 users can also play games and socialize with friends using the PlayStation Network or store images and music files on the PS3 hard drive.

PlayStation 3 Console

  • The PS3, released in 2006, is much more than just a video game console. When it was first released the PS3 had a catalog of 15 games; as of January 2011 there nearly 800 games available for the PS3. The PS3 features built-in Wi-Fi and an Ethernet input for Internet connectivity. Users can go online and play games with friends or other PS3 users on the PlayStation Network or surf the Internet using the PS3 Internet Browser, which works just like a standard web browser on your laptop or desktop computer.

Blu-Ray Player

  • As of January 2011 the PS3 is the only video game console capable of playing Blu-Ray movies in addition to regular DVDs and CDs. The PS3 Blu-Ray player lets users experience Blu-Ray movies in 1080p resolution. The Blu-Ray player also supports up to 7.1 channel surround sound and offers BD-Live. BD-Live lets you download bonus content for Blu-Ray discs if the PS3 is connected to the Internet. The PS3 Blu-Ray player also upscales regular DVD movies to high definition.

PlayStation Network

  • The PlayStation Network is the PS3's online gaming service. You can connect to the PlayStation Network as long as your PS3 is connected to the Internet. Create a PlayStation Network profile to identify yourself in the PlayStation Network's online community. You can play any online multiplayer-supported game against other users on the PlayStation Network. The PlayStation Network also gives users the ability to download demos, full games, movies and TV shows. As of January 2011, access to the PlayStation Network is free but Sony does charge for some content available on the PlayStation Network.

Photo Gallery

  • In addition to playing video games, movies and music, the PS3 can also display and store pictures. Import pictures onto the PS3 using a USB storage device, such as a flash drive. Pictures can be transferred directly from your digital camera using a USB cable. Once the pictures are on your PS3 hard drive you can view them at any time by accessing the photo gallery.
