Pittsburgh is the second largest city in Pennsylvania

Monuments can come in many shapes and forms, from historical markers to museums. Pittsburgh is a good place to go if you're looking for historical monuments. Pittsburgh was charted as a borough in 1794 and was made famous from its many steel factories. Today, the steel factories are mostly empty.

  1. Soldiers' Memorial

    • The Soldiers And Sailors Memorial Hall is a museum and a memorial to all soldiers in all branches of service in the U.S. There is also a memorial monument to the flag's 150th anniversary. The monument is located in Schenley Park in Pittsburgh and was dedicated June 14, 1927.

    Mausoleum

    • What is now the Allegheny Arsenal Monument was dedicated in 1928. Today's monument replaced an earlier marble obelisk. The monument is dedicated to the memory of 43 girls buried at Allegheny Cemetery. Many young workers were killed at the nearby Allegheny Arsenal by an explosion in 1862, deemed to be the worst industrial accident associated with the Civil War.

    Christopher Columbus Monument

    • There is a tall statue of Christopher Columbus in Schenley Park that serves as a monument to his discovery of America. It reads "Christopher Columbus. Discoverer of America. October 12, 1491." It has been the victim of at least four acts of vandalism.

    Gettysburg Address Plaque

    • There is a nice monument to Abraham Lincoln in terms of a plaque at the City-County Building in Pittsburgh honoring the Getteysburg Address. The plaque is bronze and is attached to the wall of the building. The plaque was dedicated in 1917 when the building was built.
