Arab is near the edge of the 69,000-acre man-made Lake Guntersville. It is also near the dam where the Tennessee River enters the lake. The Huntsville military arsenal is also nearby. The area encompasses the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains that provide plenty of hiking opportunities. Cavers will also enjoy Cathedral Caverns, a major cave system that is situated 20 miles north.

The town of Arab got its name due to a typographical error when the name of the town was being registered in 1892. It was supposed to be named after a man who lived in the town named Arad.
