Many universities have adopted the ram as a mascot.

A school mascot is a symbolic figure, such as an animal, object or person, adopted by a university to bring luck. Typically, universities will adopt a mascot to represent the university in athletic competition and for selling merchandise. Universities will often choose an animal as a mascot that reflects positive characteristics. In mythology, a ram reflects the personality attributes of power, energy and fearlessness. Because of these characteristics, some universities have adopted a ram as their mascot.

  1. Colorado State University

    • Located in Fort Collins, Colorado, the athletic teams of Colorado State University compete in the Mountain West Conference of Division I. The athletic teams of Colorado State are known as The Rams. The mascot of Colorado State is Cam the Ram. The name Cam is derived from the initials of Colorado State's former name, Colorado Agricultural and Mechanical College. Colorado State has both a live ram and a costumed ram that appear at athletic contests.

    Angelo State University

    • Angelo State University, which is part of the Texas Tech University system, is located in San Angelo, Texas. Angelo State University's athletic teams compete in the Lone Star Conference of Division II. The athletic teams of Angelo State University are nicknamed The Rams. The mascot of Angelo State University is a live ram named Dominic. Angelo State University also has two costumed ram mascots, a male ram named "Roscoe" who performs at men's sports events and a female ram named "Bella" who performs at women's games.

    University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill

    • The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, competes in the Atlantic Coast Conference of Division I. While the UNC teams are nicknamed the Tar Heels, UNC has both a live and costumed ram mascot named Rameses. The live Ramses is a Horned Dorset Sheep, which appears at football games with its horns painted blue.

    West Chester University

    • West Chester University, located in West Chester, Pennsylvania, competes in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. The teams of West Chester University are nicknamed The Golden Rams. The mascot of West Chester University is named Rammy, who appears in costume.

    University of Rhode Island

    • The athletic teams of the University of Rhode Island compete in the Athletic 10 and Colonial Athletic Association. The sports teams of the University of Rhode Island are The Rams, and their costumed mascot is Rhody the Ram. The University of Rhode Island has not had a live mascot since 1974.

    Fordham University

    • Fordham University, located in New York City, competes in the Atlantic 10 and Patriot League of Division I. The sports teams of Fordham are The Rams. A costumed ram appears at Fordham games.

    Virginia Commonwealth University

    • Virginia Commonwealth University, located in Richmond, Virginia, competes in the Colonial Athletic Association. VCU's teams are nicknamed The Rams. A costumed ram, named Rodney the Ram, appears at VCU games.
