Healthy Plane Snacks

Bring your own snacks when you fly.

Getting to the airport and through security can be a hassle these days. If that's not enough, many airlines have stopped serving food, even on long flights. Pack your own healthy plane snacks and you can bypass the fast food joints, enjoy tasty treats and not have to worry about hunger pangs on the plane. Just remember that liquid in containers may be confiscated by airport security so plan to buy beverages right before you board the plane. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Storage Bags

    • Along with the snacks, pack hand wipes and paper towels for clean up after the snack in zip-lock bags. Pack the snacks in their own zip-lock bags, one for each person you're traveling with. Use the bags to dispose of any leftovers.

    Temperature

    • Choose snacks that will keep at room temperature. There's no sense wasting space on ice packs or cold packs that again may be confiscated before you board. Don't use spreads, such as mayonnaise, that could spoil if left unrefrigerated if you're making sandwiches. Plane flights and delays could mean your snacks are sitting around for hours. If the sandwich needs moisture, pack sliced tomatoes in a separate bag and add right before eating.

    Vegetables/Fruits

    • Clean all vegetables and fruits. Peel, if necessary, and pack in bite-size pieces. There isn't a lot of elbow room on a plane, making one-bite pieces easier and less messy to eat. Dip fruit slices, such as apples and pears, in a solution of 1 tbsp. lemon juice and 1/2 cup water to keep them from browning. You can also buy them prepackaged and sliced.

    Cheese

    • Cheese will last for several hours at room temperature without a problem. Choose individually packaged cheese bits or cut the cheese yourself at home and package. Cheese is a good snack on a plane because it has protein and fats that will satisfy you, keeping you feeling fuller. Combine with crackers or pretzels and you won't even miss lunch.
