Computer maps are often easier and more accurate than traditional paper maps.

Thanks to the Internet, users have many ways to get driving directions and distances. A variety of websites provide maps and directions online, and several software options are also available. Software can provide more flexibility and features that are not offered in commonly used websites. Free and paid software options are available.

  1. "Google Earth"

    • "Google Earth" is by far the most popular freeware mapping and directions software available. Using the directions feature, users can plot maps and get route information and distances. Maps are only a small portion of the "Google Earth" software -- users can also see satellite imagery, custom user maps and 3-D terrain and buildings. The program's only weakness is that it is somewhat computer-intensive, due to a multitude of features other than basic mapping.

    "Microsoft Streets & Trips"

    • The #1 bestselling travel and map software for nine years running, "Streets & Trips 2011" is the latest version of the popular Microsoft series. In addition to basic features, "Streets & Trips" also features personalized maps, support for multiple destinations, and the ability to save your maps. In addition, "Streets & Trips" has the ability to connect to a GPS and provide spoken directions while driving. However, at around $40, it has a significantly higher cost than comparable freeware options. Another payware option with similar features is "Street Atlas USA" from DeLorme.

    Other Software Options

    • There are many other software options available for distance and mapping, many of which are free. Some focus on specific niches, such as providing hiking maps, GPS capability or integrated weather; others focus on a specific geographic area. Some examples include "OkMap" and "Mapyx."

    Online Options

    • If you have Internet access and need basic driving directions or maps, a number of websites currently offer mapping, distance and route information and contain an increasing number of features that rival the software options. Some popular examples include "Google Maps," "Bing Maps" and "MapQuest," amongst others. Directions can be printed right from your browser. Several feature global or nearly global coverage. For obtaining simple directions, and even for some more complex tasks, these online sites function without the need to install software.
