Requirements for a Texas Peace Officer
The Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (TCLEOSE) is the state agency that regulates the training each peace officer receives. In addition, the agency establishes minimum admission standards to screen for only the most qualified candidates. Aspiring peace officers are then eligible to move onto the training and certification to complete the requirements to serve as a Texas peace officer.
-
Peace Officer Eligibility
-
The TCLEOSE requires potential peace officers to meet certain educational and legal criteria before entering law enforcement service in Texas. Potential peace officers must have either a high school diploma, equivalent certification or an honorable discharge from military service with a minimum 24 months of active duty. In addition, peace officer trainees are required to be free of criminal charges and free of convictions for offenses above a Class B misdemeanor.
Health Requirements
-
In addition to meeting legal and educational eligibility standards, potential peace officers must meet medical and psychological standards. TCLEOSE requires Texas peaces officers to show documentation signed by a medical professional certifying the medical fitness of a peace officer candidate to perform the duties required of law enforcement officers. Medical standards also exclude any potential officer with a drug dependency and those with psychological and emotional problems.

Basic Course
-
A basic peace officer training course must meet the state requirements necessary to teach peace officer trainees the necessary skills to qualify for the state certification exam. According to TCLEOSE, trainees may complete the peace officer academy through city police departments around the state. As a substitute, trainees have the option to complete training as part of a degree program that includes a curriculum approved by TCLEOSE.
Certification Exam
-
The certification exam for peace officers covers a broad range of subjects relevant to the duties of peace officers in Texas. The exam covers legal topics including civil, criminal and traffic laws and ordinances specific to the jurisdiction the peace officer trainee wishes to serve. In addition, peace officers are tested on proper arrest procedures, searches and seizures. Peace officers are also required to demonstrate mastery in firearms usage and meet physical fitness and ethics standards.
Transfers
-
Peace officers transferring to Texas from an out-of-state jurisdiction or from federal government law enforcement agencies must meet the transfer requirements established by TCLEOSE. For example, an officer from out of state must have a work history of at least 12 months after basic training in the original state of certification. In addition, Texas law requires transferring officers to have at least 494 hours of basic peace officer training. Transferring peace officers are also required to be U.S. citizens and subject to a search through the National De-certification Database and the National Criminal History Databases.
