An Unexpected Error Occurred While Configuring the Network Bridge for Vista

A bridge is used in networking to share an Internet connection between two computers. The computer connected directly to the Internet acts as a hub, or router, for the second computer that is connected to it. This is useful for users who do not have an external router to split their connection.

  1. For a Computer with at Least 3 Network Connections.

    • According to Microsoft, if a computer has more than one computer connected to it, the bridge will not work. A network bridge is designed to work with only two computers: the host and the secondary machine. Disconnect the third computer to resolve this problem.

If Adapter Is the Internal ICS Connection

    • If the adapter that is being used to create the bridge is the internal (or private) ICS connection, the bridge will not work. The internal adapter's IP is 192.168.0.1. The bridge must connect to the external adapter that has the same IP as the host machine. Simply switch the adapter to create the bridge to an external one, to solve this error.

If the Second Adapter is Not Public

    • If the second adapter is not public, it will not be available for sharing. Run the "Network Setup Wizard" from the Windows "Control Panel" to resolve this problem. Run the Network Setup Wizard first on the host machine and then on the second adapter.

    For an Existing Bridge

    • If a bridge has already been created, it can be interfering with the creation of the new network bridge. Locate the existing bridge by going to "My Network" in "Control Panel." Right-click on any existing bridges, delete them and create a new bridge.
