Doctors who practice emergency medicine make up 4.1 percent of all active physicians and earn among the highest salary of any occupation, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The average yearly salary for an emergency room doctor depends on his level of experience, the industry in which he works and his location.

    • The annual salary range for an emergency room (ER) doctor is $148,811 to $272,803 as of January 2011, according to PayScale. This salary range includes both bonuses and profit sharing. ER doctors can also expect to receive medical, dental and vision coverage, as well as pension and retirement plans.

    Experience

    • Working in the ER requires highly developed skills and the ability to focus under extreme pressure. As an emergency doctor gains experience, these skills, as well as her salary, are likely to increase. The salary range for an emergency doctor with less than a year of experience is between $100,000 and $197,002, a range which is $99,136 to $203,254 after just one year. With over five years of experience that range rises to $139,757 to $238,126, and after ten years it becomes $146,674 to $245,451, according to PayScale in January 2011.

    Industry

    • Emergency physicians can be employed by several different types of organizations, each of which has an impact on yearly salary. An ER doctor in a hospital earns between $116,269 and $204,371, while one specifically at an acute care hospital earns more at a range of $147,395 to $220,688. ER doctors working in medical offices earn between $145,816 and $202,556, while those in the industry of emergency medical services earn between $134,498 and $247,604.

    Location

    • Cost of living and the demand for ER physicians also have a bearing on wages. PayScale names Texas as the top-paying state for emergency doctors with a salary range of $114,803 to $250,256, followed by California with a range of $121,099 to $238,540. Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan follow with salary ranges that peak at $237,983, $215,681 and $214,598 respectively.
