Students with a passion for the past who decide to major in history can find various grants and scholarships to help finance their studies.

  1. Minnesota State University

    • The Minnesota State University's history department offers several grants and scholarships for history majors. The David Taylor Scholarship provides two annual $500 scholarships for undergraduates. The freshmen award goes to a newly-declared history major, and applicants must submit a brief essay describing the decision to focus on this field. The other award, selected by faculty, goes to the Outstanding History major. The Jean Hofer Scholarship is awarded to junior or senior history majors who intend to nurture a career teaching history.

    Ohio State University

    • Ohio State University history majors may apply for several sources of funding to aid in their studies. Grants are available enabling history majors to study abroad. History majors entering their senior year with a focus on Modern European History from 1815 to the present may apply. Applicants must submit official transcripts, three letters of recommendation, curriculum vitae, and a letter from the history department chairman confirming that the course of study is not online. Students must also include information on the era and area of European history on which their studies concentrate.

    Central Washington University

    • Central Washington University's Department of History offers the full-tuition Barto History Scholarship

      for seniors with outstanding academic records. The Washington State Society Daughters of the American Revolution sponsors the Sarah Soule Patton Scholarship for a junior concentrating in U.S. history. Graduate history students may apply for the Rodine Memorial History Award for research and travel-related expenses. Juniors and seniors interested in pursuing local history are eligible for the Clareta Olmstead Smith Scholarship, and grantees must complete a rural history-related project.
