I Can't Connect Due to Norton

Norton security software is one of the leading brands in the networking industry. While this software will protect your computer from viral threats, it also can cause some problems with other functions of your computer. If you cannot connect to the Internet while running Norton software, it is because the firewall in Norton is interfering with the firewall on your router/modem. Follow a few steps to fix this.

  1. Find Norton

    • Open Norton's software. The easiest way is to find Norton's icon on the taskbar, which is next to the clock on your computer desktop and composed of different icons. Each icon represents a program running on your computer. Double-click on Norton's icon, a yellow circle with an "N" in the center.

    Select 'Manage Firewall'

    • Select the "Manage Firewall" option. Different versions of Norton vary in appearance, but the selection options will be the same. The newest version of Norton is going to have four icons. Select the first icon (PC Security), a lock surrounded by a yellow circle. The "Manage Firewall" option is under PC Security.

    Disable Firewall

    • Turn off Norton's Firewall. It is called "Smart Firewall" on the newest version of Norton. Click the "Smart Firewall" icon, and it will turn red, indicating it is off. Older versions of Norton just have an "On/Off" button.

    Test connectivity

    • Open a Web browser to connect to the Internet. Now that your firewall is off, it won't interfere with your other network firewalls, and you will be able to connect to the Internet. Do not worry about turning off your firewall. If it was causing the problem with your connectivity, you had multiple firewalls running at the same time. You will still have another firewall running to protect your computer.
