Historical preservation grants help restore an old building to its former beauty.

Finding the money to restore a historical building can be the hardest part of a renovation. To aid with preserving its history, the state of Texas has several resources for assistance in locating grant money.

  1. Texas Preservation Trust Fund Grants

    • The Texas Preservation Trust Fund provides grants that will pay for up to one-half of the project costs. Eligible projects include commercial buildings, historic structures such as bridges and public buildings like schools and libraries. It also covers archeological surveys, plus the education and training of individuals and organizations in preservation techniques and resources.

    Certified Local Government Grants

    • Money from Certified Local Government grants can be used for the preparation of preservation plans and the completion or updating of surveys of historic resources. These grants require support from the local community as an in-kind service or cash match.

    Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program

    • Established in June 1999, the Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program will provide partial matching funds to any Texas county to restore its historic county courthouse.

    Local Resources

    • Some Texas cities and counties such as Houston, Ft. Worth and Dallas maintain preservation organizations. You can obtain a list of organizations and contacts through the National Trust for Historic Preservation website (see Resources).
