Ethical Hacking Certification

A certified ethical hacker is an information technology (IT) professional who tries to penetrate a computer network using the same methods that a hacker would use. This is done in order to ensure that the network is protected against various means of intrusion. Ethical hackers can attend training classes that earn them the designation of Certified Ethical Hacker.

Benefits of Certification

The EC Council, a provider of certified ethical hacker training, notes that certification benefits IT professionals in several ways. Training exposes students to real-life scenarios and threats. It provides them with an opportunity to utilize tools that are used by hackers, in order to understand how to thwart the illegal use of those tools. Certified ethical hackers learn under the guidance of top information security experts.

Certification Program Curriculum

In the five-day certified ethical hacker course offered by EC Council, students complete numerous modules. These cover topics such as hacking laws, viruses and worms, hacking wireless networks, and phishing. They learn about the techniques hackers use to circumvent firewalls and password protection. In addition, they explore the vulnerabilities of web applications. At the Qualified Ethical Hacker course offered at Security University, students complete 35 hands-on labs that cover topics such as Trojan attacks, reconnaissance and penetration-testing methods.

Certification Exam Features

Students who complete an ethical hacking course are qualified to take the Certified Ethical Hacker exam offered by the EC Council. An individual who does not take a course in ethical hacking but wishes to become certified must provide proof of eligibility. This includes at least two years of verified information security work experience. The 150-question exam can be taken at a number of testing centers across the Unites States. Candidates need a score of at least 70 percent to pass; the test covers topics including hacking techniques and technology.

Careers for Certified Ethical Hackers

Certified ethical hackers come from information technology and information security backgrounds. They use their knowledge to help protect computer networks in the private and public sectors. The EC Council notes that certified ethical hackers can provide their services as consultants; rates range between $15,000 and $45,000 per assignment. Ethical hackers who want to pursue additional certifications are eligible to enroll in the EC Council's Certified Security Analyst and Licensed Penetration Tester courses.
