Definitions of Libertarianism and Free Will

If you subscribe to the concept of libertarian free will this means that you believe the choices that humans make are not controlled by constraints or determined by human nature nor predetermined by God. Philosophically, free will means that humans are rational and capable of making choices from several alternative choices.

  1. Moral Responsibilities

    • If our choices are caused or determined by something then these choices can not be considered a free choice. The freedom that comes with libertarian free will means you are free to act in opposition to your own nature, against predisposition and against your greatest desires. You are morally responsible and can choose the way you act and could have chosen to act otherwise.

    Uncaused

    • When man has free will his decisions are not caused by God but are influenced by God. To act freely means uncaused. The belief is that God does not limit a person's will or mind by limiting the actions of man.

    Open Theism and Arminianism

    • Libertarian free will is linked to Open Theism, which claims that God does not predetermine the free choices of humans nor does he foreknow what those choices are going to be. It is also linked to the concept of Arminianism, which acknowledges that God foresees the free choices of humans and responds accordingly.

    Human Nature

    • Human nature does effect free will but we do have the ability to make choices even when those choices do not mesh with our natural desires or are contrary to our basic nature, according to libertarian free will.
