Virginia Nursing Grants & Scholarships
The Virginia Workforce Connection predicts that from 2008 through 2018 the demand for licensed practical and registered nurses in the state will increase by more than 28 and 23 percent, respectively. To gain a nursing license, a postsecondary education is necessary. The state of Virginia offers grant and scholarship programs for students in these programs as well as graduate courses. The Virginia Department of Health oversees the state's nursing financial aid program.

Commonwealth of Virginia Nursing Scholarship Program

The purpose of the this program is to increase the number of nursing faculty members at nursing colleges in Virginia. To qualify for admission, students must be accepted into or enrolled in a master's or doctorate program in nursing education. Students can receive funding annually for two years and must complete their programs within that time frame. As of 2010, the scholarship program paid up to $20,000 per year. In exchange for receiving funds, nurses must agree to work for two years in a Virginia nursing college following graduation. If they fail to complete their work obligations, recipients must repay the amount of the awards received plus interest.
Mary Marshall Nursing Scholarship Program for Licensed Practical Nurses

The scholarship provides funding for students completing practical nursing programs in the state of Virginia. These programs typically last for one year and culminate in a certificate or diploma. As of 2010, more than 75 of such programs were located in the state and had approval from the Virginia Board of Nursing. The scholarship program provides funding for one year for full or part-time students. Although the scholarship does not automatically renew, recipients can apply again for up to four years. A letter of recommendation is required for consideration. The amount of the awards vary annually based on the availability of funds and the number of applicants. In exchange for the scholarship funds, students agree to work full-time as a nurse in Virginia for one month per each $100 received. Nurses who do not fulfill this obligation must repay monies received plus interest.

Mary Marshall Nursing Scholarship Program for Registered Nurses

This program provides funding for student's seeking associate's or bachelor's degrees in pursuit of a registered nurse license in Virginia. To qualify, students must have a 3.0 GPA on all required coursework and demonstrate financial need. Applicants also must submit a copy of their high school and any college transcripts. Like the practical nursing program, recipients can reapply annually for up to four years. Scholarship amounts vary and students must agree to work full-time as a nurse in Virginia for one month per each $100 received. Those who do not fulfill this obligation must repay the program.
Virginia's Nurse Practitioner/ Nurse Midwife Scholarship Program

This program offers tuition assistance for nurses in master's or doctorate programs who plan to pursue careers as a nurse practitioner or nurse-midwife. Recipients may attend a program in Virginia or a neighboring state. Applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA on all undergraduate and graduate coursework. Two letters of recommendation and official transcripts also are necessary for consideration. Winners may receive funds for up to two years. Award amounts vary annually. Nurses must agree to work in a medically underserved area of Virginia for one year for each year of scholarship funding they receive.
