Fuses are color-coded according to amperage.

The Chevy Cavalier has two fuse boxes. The first fuse box is located on the driver's side wall at the top of the engine compartment. This box is about 10 to 12 inches long and about 6 to 8 inches wide and houses many of the larger fuses and relays. The second fuse box is located under the dash on the driver's side wall.

  1. Engine Compartment Fuse Box

    • Open the hood and look on the wall of the engine compartment on the driver's side. About 3/4 of the way from the front of the car to the windshield you will see a large black box. This is the engine compartment fuse and relay box. Undo the clip holding down the front of the box and open it; it is hinged on the back so the top opens like a door.

    Passenger Compartment Fuse Box

    • Open the driver's side door. Kneel down on the ground by the foot pedals. Look on the driver's side wall under the dashboard. You will see a small black box right by the door. This is the passenger compartment fuse box. This box also has a clip to keep the front closed and hinges on the back.

    Finding the Right Fuse

    • The owner's manual that came with your Chevy Cavalier will have a detailed diagram of each fuse box. This diagram will show where each fuse goes in the respective fuse boxes and will also have a key that shows what that particular fuse is for.

    Fuse Types

    • Automobile fuses are color-coded according to the amperage they are rated to withstand. Orange is rated for 5 amps, red for 10 amps, blue for 15 amps, yellow for 20 amps, clear or amber for 25 amps and green for 30 amps.
