Resume Format for Electrical Engineers

Resume Format for Electrical Engineers thumbnail
The layout of your resume depends on your career as an electrical engineer.

For electrical engineers searching for work, a strong resume with the proper format is essential to getting noticed in a competitive field. While the most traditional resume format for those with a career in electrical engineering is chronological, the format you choose should be one which best displays your individual career, experience and skills.

  1. Chronological

    • Because electrical engineers generally stay in one field and change positions or companies, a chronological format is typically best. This type of resume should list all of your jobs related to electrical engineering in reverse chronological order, starting with the most current. Include your exact job title, the name of the company, your dates of employment, the location and a list of specific duties or engineering projects you worked on during that time.

    Sections

    • An electrical engineering resume should include an education section that lists all engineering degrees and certification, the job experience section and a list of relevant or transferable skills. Other optional sections include professional memberships, professional development (such as engineering-related seminars, conferences or workshops you participated in) and awards and honors.

    Other Formats

    • Some electrical engineers are hired as contracted workers for several different companies, often working on more than one project at a time. If this is your case, a functional resume format may be more effective. The functional resume begins with a detailed list of your skills and projects as an electrical engineer. Your education and experience sections follow, with the companies you worked for listed in order of relevance rather than chronological. For example, if one of the companies hired you for a project that was more mechanical than electrical, it should be listed after companies that hired you as an electrical engineer.

    Objectives and Summaries

    • Traditional chronological resumes include an objective, although that section is no longer required. Quint Careers recommends that if you do include an objective, make it as specific as possible. Your objective should include one or two of your electrical engineering skills that are particularly outstanding and focus on the exact field you wish to work, such as electrical circuits or systems. If you are a seasoned engineer with several years experience and are applying for a higher position at your company, a summary of experience may be more appropriate than a resume. The summary of experience is one to two paragraphs that summarize your career as an engineer in a way that shows you have been adequately prepared for the job.
