Wacky Scholarships for High School Freshmen

Most high school freshmen are attempting to adjust to life in high school and while college may be far from their minds, freshmen can find several scholarships open to them. For high school freshmen with a quirky side or for those who just want to have a little fun while earning money for college, various groups and organizations offer wacky scholarships for high school freshmen.

  1. Duck Brand Stuck at Prom Scholarship

    • For high school freshmen with a flair for clothing design, the Duck Brand Stuck at Prom Scholarship contest awards scholarship money to students who design the best prom outfits completely out of duct tape. The contest is open to all high school students ages 14 and up. Students must enter as two-person teams and must attend a high school prom wearing their duct tape attire. First place awards $5,000 in scholarship money to each person in the two-person team; second place receives $3,000 a person; and third place gets $2,000 a person.

    National Beef Ambassador Program

    • High school freshmen with a love and appreciation for beef can enter the National Beef Ambassador Program in the junior division and win scholarship money. To compete, students give a presentation to a panel of judges about beef production or nutrition, answer questions after the presentation and then participate in a one-on-one interview. Winners are chosen to be part of the Beef Ambassador Team and receive $1,000 in scholarship money.

    Make It With Wool Contest

    • Sponsored by the American Sheep Industry Association, the Make It With Wool contest encourages youths to use wool to create clothing to enter in the annual contest. High school freshmen may enter the Junior Division, open to youths 13 to 16, and winners at the state level move on to the national contest. Winners in the Junior Division receive $1,000 or $2,000 scholarships. Participants can enter in one of three categories: one-piece garments; two-piece garments; and ensembles. Garments must be made from 100 percent wool or a wool blend.

    United States Bowling Congress Gift for Life Scholarship

    • All kinds of college scholarships exist for athletes, even for athletes in obscure sports like bowling. The United States Bowling Congress offers the Gift of Life Scholarship for high school freshmen through seniors. Applicants must be active bowlers and youth members of the USBC, have a minimum 2.5 grade point average and have financial need. The annual award hands out 12 $1,000 scholarships each year to six female students and six male students.
