What Should Small Businesses Do During Recession?

Recessions can easily trap an economy in a vicious downward spiral. When spending drops, economic growth declines, and jobs are lost--which can lead to additional declines in spending, economic growth and jobs. Recessions hit small-business owners hard. Unlike many of their larger counterparts, few small businesses have large cash reserves or other cushions to weather the economic downturn. To survive, many small businesses must take drastic measures.

  1. Cut Discretionary Spending

    • One of the most essential steps a business can take to survive a drop in business is to take control of its cash flow. In heady times, a few dollars spent here and there for unessential items can improve the business and making running it a bit less stressful, but during a recession you must pare back.

    Focus on Customer Service

    • You must maintain the customer base you already have. If you can't do this by being more financially competitive, such as by cutting prices or improving your product, make up ground with improved customer service. Establish a durable personal relationship with as many of your clients as possible, a relationship that will keep them coming back.

    Scale Back

    • Scaling back a business can sometimes kill it off, particularly if the reduction in size causes revenues to dip below a critical threshold. However, in some cases, laying off employees and paring back the products or services you offer can help you survive the lean times. When business improves, you can always expand again and rehire.

    Take A Risk

    • Alternatively, instead of scaling back, some small-business owners push all their chips forward and use the recession as an opportunity to launch a bold new product or service. While business may be down in general, some products and services boom during recessions. For example, professional liquidators often have more work than they can handle. Finding a way of shifting your business to capitalize on the economic conditions may be your ticket back to profitability.
