Missouri State Requirements for a Pharmacy Tech

A pharmacy tech assists pharmacists in filling prescriptions, serving customers and performing administrative duties in a pharmacy. The Missouri Board of Pharmacy regulates the registration of pharmacy technicians working in the state. The average salary for a pharmacy technician is between $19,070 and $28,364, as of December 2010, according to PayScale.

  1. Eligibility

    • Missouri requires a high school education for pharmacy technicians working in the state. The candidate may have a GED as well as a high school diploma to apply for registration with the Missouri Board of Pharmacy. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, pharmacy technicians who have completed a pharmacy technician training program enhance their opportunities. While the state requires a high school education for registration, employers may prefer candidates for employment with a certification. Students learn record keeping in pharmacies, pharmaceutical terminology and the law and ethics of working in a pharmacy.

    Application for Registration

    • The Missouri Board of Pharmacy requires that pharmacy technicians complete an application to register with the state as a pharmacy tech. Candidates for registration must submit a notarized application fee, a 2 by 2 inch photograph and a receipt providing proof of fingerprinting.

    Background Check

    • All candidates for registration in Missouri are subject to a criminal background check. The state may disqualify a candidate from registering as a pharmacy technician in the state if any of the information on the application is false. The state board of pharmacy can suspend the registration of those who have not paid Missouri state taxes as well. Applicants must submit court documents of any criminal cases in the past, which show the date of the arrest, law violated and the result of the case.

    Certification and Renewal

    • Missouri does not require certification to register as a pharmacy technician in the state. Once registered, pharmacy technicians do not have to renew the registration or complete continuing-education requirements.
