Private accounting jobs encompass a range of duties that fall under the umbrella of accounting and auditing, which mainly relate to the recording, analysis and communication of financial information.   1. Certified Public Accountants

    • Certified Public Accountants, CPAs, usually have their own practice or work for public accounting firms. They carry out a range of accounting activities including consultation on accounting matters such as employee compensation, design of data processing systems, auditing financial documents and preparation of tax returns. CPAs are amongst the high earners in the accounting industry with salaries ranging between $48,537 and $73,889 with profit sharing options and bonuses, according to PayScale. They have excellent future job prospects, which include transition to financial controller, Chief Financial Officer and Assistant Controller, Financial.

    Management Accountants

    • A management accountant's job description involves tasks like budgeting, cost and asset management and performance evaluations as part of his daily routine. Management accountants are normally members of executive teams that are in charge of strategic planning and product development. They are also responsible for preparing and presenting financial reports to stakeholders. Management accountants earn salaries between $43,578 and $67,495 and popular industries include financial services, accounting/auditing firms and healthcare. Detroit and Houston are among the top payers for this position.

    Government Accountants

    • Government accountants and auditors are in charge of accounting activities in the public sector. These activities include maintaining and analyzing government agency records, auditing private corporations and individuals who must follow official accounting regulations set down by the government. Accountants who work for the Federal or local governments are also responsible for ensuring that the collection of revenues and expenditure of funds abides by the law. Government accountants may also be employed by the IRS for tax collection, preparation and reconciliation purposes.

    Internal Auditing

    • Internal auditors are in charge of analyzing accounting records of establishments, checking their accuracy and reliability. They also check and review the effectiveness of the controls that identify mismanagement, fraud and waste of company funds and operations. The salary range for internal auditors falls between $40,670 and $59,670, according to PayScale. Future job possibilities include those of senior internal auditor and internal auditing manager, the salaries of which go beyond $100,000 per year.
