How Can a Honda V6 Engine Be More Efficient?

There are inexpensive and expensive ways to improve fuel economy.

Improving the gas mileage of a Honda V6 is particularly important when gas prices begin to rise. Some methods of improving gas mileage are inexpensive and can be performed at home. Others will require a mechanic's assistance. Additionally, your budget will determine the best options for your vehicle as some of the improvements can be costly.

High-Flow Air Filter

One of the cheapest and easiest ways to get better fuel economy from a Honda V6 is to install a high-flow air filter. High-flow air filters are made from cotton fibers coated in a special oil. The oil pulls dirt and particles out of the air as it passes through the filter, but it does not restrict air flow as much as a stock air filter. Better air flow into the engine leads to better compression in the cylinders and a more complete ignition. This gives the engine more power without using extra fuel.

Spark Plugs

Replacing the spark plugs in the Honda V6 will also help fuel economy. When spark plugs become coated with carbon, they do not produce as strong a spark. This causes poor ignition and fuel burn in the engine, leading to more unburned fuel vented as exhaust. This is particularly true with engines with lots of miles on them. Spark plugs are inexpensive, and you can get spark plugs designed for fuel economy for the Honda V6.

Fuel Injection

Although some debate its efficacy, another commonly recommended method to improve fuel economy is to use a fuel injector cleaner. There are a number of different brands of cleaners, and they are added to a tank of fuel. The cleaners remove buildup and grime on the fuel injectors so that they spray a finer mist of fuel. A finer mist leads to better fuel and air mixing, which results in a more complete ignition. Fuel injector cleaners are inexpensive and are available from most auto repair shops.

Exhaust

When the engine spends more energy pushing out exhaust gasses, less power is transferred to the wheels. Allowing exhaust gasses to vent more easily means more horsepower with less fuel. There are a number of ways to improve the exhaust system of a Honda V6 engine. Check to make sure the catalytic converter is clean, and possibly invest in a high-flow catalytic converter. Consider installing a high-flow muffler, and, if you have the money, invest in a performance exhaust system.
