The 1999 Volkswagen Passat came with a choice of two different engines: a 1.8-liter, four-cylinder turbo and a 2.8-liter V-6. The V-6 was offered with a choice of a five-speed manual or an automatic transmission. Buyers could choose between two body styles, a sedan and station wagon.

  1. Engine and Fuel Economy

    • The 1.8-liter inline four-cylinder engine was turbocharged, giving it 150 horsepower at 5,700 rpm and 155 pounds-feet of torque at 1,750 rpm. The 2.8-liter V-6 is more powerful, getting 190 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 206 pounds-feet of torque at 3,200 rpm. The V-6 has a 30-valve dual overhead cam fuel injected engine, while the four-cylinder has 20 valves, giving both engines five valves per cylinder. The V-6 is rated by the EPA at 20 miles per gallon (mpg) in town and 29 mpg on the highway, while the four-cylinder is rated slightly better at 23 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway.

    Interior

    • The sedan and wagon have the same interior dimensions. They provide 39.7 inches of headroom in the front seats and 37.8 inches in the rear, 41.5 inches of legroom in the front and 35.3 inches in the rear, and 55.8 inches of shoulder room up front and 54.6 inches in the back.

    Features

    • Standard features include dual front airbags, cruise control, power locks and windows, and an anti-theft alarm. A power moonroof is standard on the sedan, while it is an available option with the wagon. Other available options include leather seating and steering wheel, heated front seats, a compact disc changer, and alloy wheels.

    Exterior

    • The exterior of the Passat sedan measures 68.5 inches wide, 57.6 inches high and 184.1 inches long. The sedan's wheelbase measures 106.3 inches, giving it a turning circle of 37.4 feet. The wagon is slightly shorter at 183.8 inches, slightly taller at 59 inches, and has the same width. The wagon also offers the same turning circle and wheelbase dimensions. The sedan with the V-6 weighs 3,580 lbs., the four-cylinder wagon weighs 3,304 lbs., and the four-cylinder sedan also weighs 3,304 lbs.
