If a hacker infiltrates a company's network and steals confidential information, he can cause the company to lose customers or go out of business. This is why organizations spend much time on hiring the right people to fill their network security jobs. Many network security jobs don't require individuals to have formal degrees. Instead, the jobs may require them to have computer networking certifications.

  1. Network Administrator

    • A network administrator sets up user accounts so that users can access specific applications, databases, files or network drives. The network administrator also sets up firewalls, which are hardware devices and software tools that block unauthorized users from accessing the network. To be successful at this job, this person must know computer science, science and math.     Network Security Analyst

    • A network security analyst protects network data from hackers or disgruntled employees. He stops the unauthorized user from modifying or destroying data. The security analyst also trains his staff about network security concerns. This person has a bachelor's degree and certifications in areas such as management information systems or computer programming. According to PayScale, a network security analyst's salary ranges from $49,844 to $74,425 as of December 2010.

    Network Security Consultant

    • A network security consultant creates and manages a company's network infrastructure. This individual tests all of the network devices to make sure they're working properly. The network security consultant also searches and detects security breaches in the network and determines how severe they are. She then comes up with solutions to fix them. Some companies may require the individual to have a college degree. However, companies can favor individuals who are certified information systems security professional (CISSP). CISSP is a worldwide-known information security certificate. According to PayScale, a network security consultant's salary ranges from $60,123 to $97,167 as of December 2010.

    Chief Information Security Officer

    • The chief information security officer (CISO) protects the company's information assets. He also develops, implements and maintains processes and standards on information security such as network, email and wireless security. The CISO must have good interpersonal skills because he'll have to communicate with corporate executives and network engineers. CISOs should have a bachelor's degree in information science or computer science. The person can become CISSP-certified. According to Salary, a CISO's salary ranges from $107,763 to $224,656 as of December 2010.
