In a world where many business operations are conducted online and people communicate with each other via social media and other digital tools, the job of a software developer is an important one. Also called software engineers, these professionals design software, fix it when it's broken, and come up with upgrades that make software work better. They may also design or manage the systems on which computer networks run. As far as professions go, it's a relatively well-paid one.

Average Salaries

  • According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, software developers or engineers made a median salary of $101,410 per year, as of May 2013. On the low end, they made about $63,140, while on the highest end made about $150,760 per year. The job requires analytical skills and a strong attention to detail, as well as strong communication skills. Most software engineers earn at least a bachelor's degree in computer science or software engineering, though some may also have master's degrees in a related field.
