How Do I Troubleshoot Pentax Optio S40?

The Pentax Optio S40, released in 2004, is a 4.0-megapixel digital camera with about 11 megabytes of flash drive storage along with a memory card slot. The Optio S40 allows a wide range of shooting modes in digital format, from super close-ups to underwater picture capabilities. Although this Pentax digital camera is highly customizable, it's not incredibly durable, so proper handling and troubleshooting techniques can greatly extend its service life.

  1. LCD Screen

    • Pay attention to any messages that pop up on the LCD screen of your Pentax Optio S40 digital camera. If any problems with internal components on the digital camera arise, a corresponding error message displays on the LCD screen telling you what steps to take. A majority of the error messages deal with the camera's memory card; the Pentax Optio S40 will tell you when the memory card is full, if the card is locked and cannot be written onto or if it must be formatted to work with the Optio S40. Other error messages pop up in response to low battery power, problems with the PictBridge printing system or issues with recording sound for video.

    Focus Problems

    • There are many conditions which could cause the focus on your Pentax Optio S40 to work improperly. If the color tone of your picture's subject and its immediate background are too similar, if the subject has an intricate pattern or if you're trying to shoot the picture through a window or netting, the Optio S40 may have difficulties focusing on the subject.

Your camera may also have problems focusing on a close subject if the Optio S40 is in Macro or Super Macro mode. These modes are designed for taking pictures of subjects that are within 2.4 inches to 20 inches of the camera. The zoom function will not work in Super Macro mode. Change the focus mode by pressing the left or right buttons on the four-way directional control pad and looking at the focus icon appearing on the LCD screen; no icon indicates Autofocus mode and an "MF" indicates Manual Focus mode.

    Common Problems

    • Check the batteries in your Pentax Optio S40 if you're having problems starting your digital camera. This is an indication that the batteries are either installed incorrectly or that new batteries are needed.

Press the "DISPLAY" button, found on the camera's back on the bottom right portion of the circle surrounding the four-way directional control, if the camera is on but the LCD monitor isn't displaying a picture. If the display mode is set to "LCD Monitor Off," then the picture won't display. Pictures won't display on the LCD monitor if it's hooked up to the TV or a computer and dark pictures will develop if taking outdoor pictures in bright sunlight.

Check your flash charge if your shutter won't release to take a picture. A blinking red indicator on the LCD monitor will flash if it's still building a charge. If you're taking pictures and the flash isn't going off when it should, check the settings to make sure that the capture mode is not set to underwater, museum or video recording; none of these settings utilize a flash.

    Handling Tips

    • Turn on and operate your Pentax Optio S40 camera a few hours before any important event if you haven't used the camera within the past few weeks. Keep the camera away from heat and humidity, which can damage internal components or cause condensation to form on the lens. Keep the camera away from any liquids or extreme weather, as it is not built to be resistant to either; a waterproof camera case allows the Optio S40 to take underwater pictures in Marine capture mode. Keep the waterproof camera case well-ventilated to discourage mold from growing.
