    • The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that the average national salary for personal trainers as of May 2009 ranged between $7.90 per hour, or $16,430 per year for the lowest 10 percent of earners, to $29.86 per hour, or $62,120 per year for the highest 10 percent. The median 50 percent of these workers earned $14.74 per hour, or $30,670 per year.

    Industry

    • Personal trainer salaries also differed by who employed the trainer. The highest-paying industry for these workers in 2009 was the educational support services sector, with workers earning an average hourly salary of $26.37 or yearly salary of $54,840. The lowest-paying industries included amusement and recreational sector, and other schools and instruction sector, with salaries as low as $14.24 per hour or $29,610 per year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

    States

    • Salaries for personal trainers also vary from state to state. The top five states with the highest personal trainer salaries in 2009 were New York, the District of Columbia, California, New Jersey and Massachusetts. New York had the highest average salary, with trainers earning an average of $23.48 per hour or $48,830 per year.

    Cities

    • Average personal trainer salaries differed by city as well. The top five metropolitan areas in 2009 were Framingham, Massachusetts; New York City; Nassau, New York; Billings, Montana; and Burnstable, Massachusetts. The highest-paying area, Framingham, had average salaries of $30.94 per hour or $64,350 per year.
