Types of Carpets
When you visit a carpet store, you may feel a bit overwhelmed by the various types to choose from. It's helpful to get an idea of the general types of carpets on the market before you even leave the house. Take your time when deciding on a carpet for your home or business to ensure that you get the maximum use and enjoyment out of the one you choose.

Choosing a Carpet
-
Consider three main decisions when deciding which type of carpet is right for your needs. The first factor is how often you plan to use the room (high or low traffic). The second is the need for comfort---do you plan to walk barefoot through the room often? Another consideration is the look that you wish to achieve in the room. Some carpets are more visually pleasing compared to others.
Loop Pile
-
If you look closely at a loop pile carpet, you'll see that it contains a series of small tight loops that make up the surface. You may have a choice between level or multi-level loop carpet. The level loop type has strands of the same size while multi-level loop carpet has various sizes. This type of carpet is more durable compared to others and thus is commonly reserved for high-traffic areas and commercial areas.

Cut Pile
-
If you want to buy carpet for your home, particularly low-traffic areas, you'll probably want to look at cut pile carpet. As the name suggests, the loops are cut to leave straight individual strands. You have three main types of cut pile to choose from: plush, which has a smooth velvety feel that your feet sink into; saxony, which is a smooth but level surface; and frieze carpet, which is more of a curled cut that doesn't show footprints. A cut pile carpet is commonly used in residential areas.
Cut and Loop
-
You may also find a carpet that has both loops and cut strands. This style results in a more decorative and visually pleasing carpet. The varying strands allow for more complex designs. If your main purpose for carpeting the room is so that it's nice to look at---not so much for utility---then consider cut and loop styles.
