Smart Goals & Business Coaching
In business, it's important to make sure that goals are set. Whether the goal is short-term or long-term, it needs to be defined. So, whether a business owner is looking to stay in business or is trying to open up eight branch offices around the world, goals need to be established. One way that business owners can set goals is by implementing the S.M.A.R.T. system.

S.M.A.R.T.
-
The S.M.A.R.T. system is an acronym for Specific Measurable Attainable Realistic Timeline. A business coach will break down each element for the business, showing areas where the present conditions are working and where they are not working. Then, adjustments are made accordingly.
Coaching
-
Using a business coach is one way to achieve S.M.A.R.T. goals. A business coach is a trained individual who comes into a business and instructs management and workers how to operate in the most efficient manner possible. The training for a business coach can vary from certified online instruction to attending brick-and-mortar campuses. Using the tools within the S.M.A.R.T. system, the business coach provides a foundation for the business to use.

Specific
-
A business coach using the S.M.A.R.T. system makes sure that the goal is specific. The workers need to understand exactly what it is expected of them. Simply telling them that they're in business to make money is not as helpful as saying that one way they can make more money is by upselling products and services. Being specific allows focus to be attained when working toward a goal.
Measurable
-
A measurable goal is the next area that a business coach examines. When a goal can be measured in concrete terms, progress is much easier to gauge. Knowing that a business needs to make more money is not as helpful as saying the business needs to make an additional $500 per week. When a goal has been set up that is measurable, plans can be implemented to bring the plan to fruition.
Attainable
-
The goal that is set must be attainable. If a business's goal is to make an additional $1 million a week, it's not attainable if the business has only been generating $3,000 a week. However, if a business has to make an additional $500 a week, that is more attainable. The goal, while difficult, is not impossible.
Realistic
-
Another aspect that a business coach takes into account is whether the goal is realistic. A business that needs to make an additional $500 a week might have a goal that is attainable, but if the business does not have any additional manpower to dedicate to making additional revenue and if there are so many outstanding debts that the business is teetering on the verge of bankruptcy, the business coach has to go to the owner and make the goal more realistic.
Timeline
-
The final aspect that a business coach will address is setting up a timeline. Part of the success of a S.M.A.R.T. goal plan is having a timeline established. Timelines provide a kind of "ticking clock" to a goal. Naturally, the timeline has to be in keeping with the other elements of the S.M.A.R.T. system. A timeline that cannot possibly be met serves no purpose.
