  1. Active Ingredient

    • Lemon eucalyptus oil is a plant-based insect repellent containing the active ingredient p-menthane 3.8-diol, or PMD, a synthesized version of the oil. It should not be confused with pure lemon eucalyptus oil, also known as the essential oil, has not been scientifically tested for its effectiveness against mosquitoes.

    Efficacy and Safety

    • The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has registered lemon eucalyptus oil as a mosquito repellent. This means that the EPA has determined that it is effective and unlikely to cause adverse effects. Some people may experience skin or eye irritation and should then discontinue use. Lemon eucalyptus oil is the longest-lasting plant-based repellent available, providing about six hours of protection against mosquitoes.

    Use

    • Follow the directions on the label, as different concentrations of lemon eucalyptus oil may require frequent application. As with all mosquito repellents, use enough to cover all exposed skin and clothing and reapply when mosquitoes begin biting again. You may need to reapply more often if you are sweating heavily or are getting wet.

    Children

    • Use lemon eucalyptus oil on children under 3 years of age is not recommended. Avoid using it on children's hands, as they often put their hands in their mouths. Keep repellent containers away from children.
