Find the right GPS system for your vehicle and general needs.

As GPS systems have become increasingly popular and common vehicle accessories, the choices available on the market have become both cheaper and more plentiful. You may find it difficult to determine which GPS system meets your needs most effectively and provides a good value for the money you spend on it. The right GPS system for your vehicle will depend on several variable factors, including how --- and how often -- you plan to use it.

  1. Features

    • GPS systems come with a wide variety of different features, including hands-free and Bluetooth options, voice recognition, touch screen, Internet connectivity, traffic updates, a variety of screen sizes, multiple routing options, electronic longitude and latitude coordinate mapping, point-of-interest updates and a multitude of installation and connectivity options. If you plan to use your GPS system regularly in a variety of vehicles, look for a GPS that is easy to install and offers sophisticated features such as point-of-interest updates, which work much like an Internet search engine to inform you on local places and activities.

    Accuracy

    • The entire point of having a GPS system centers on the constant ability to find out your location, where you are going and how you will get there. Some GPS systems offer more miles of recognized roads and road information than others, especially when dealing with rural areas. If you plan to do a significant amount of travel on backroads or off main highways, look for a GPS system that will show lightly traveled roads in rural areas. If you rarely travel outside a major city or off of highways highway, you probably will not need as many miles of roadways on your GPS system and may be able to get by with a less-expensive system that does not have these options.

    Usability

    • It won't matter how sophisticated a GPS system you have, how many miles of roads it offers or how many unique and interesting features it has if you cannot use it properly or comfortably. Some GPS systems are significantly more user friendly than others. If you are not known for your technological savvy, look for a system that claims to be simple to use -- and possibly one with fewer options. A wide variety of constantly appearing options can become confusing if you are not comfortable operating the device or do not understand how to program the features to work correctly.

    Price

    • GPS systems vary greatly in price. You can find inexpensive, less-sophisticated systems for less than $100, while high-quality systems with numerous features and options can cost upwards of $1,000. Expensive, high-tech GPS navigation systems make sense for individuals who will rely on their GPS systems heavily and travel frequently, while cheaper systems may provide the perfect solution for individuals who only leave town occasionally and primarily need help navigating around a city or other well-established area.
