Grants in Photography
Grants in photography cover most genres and styles, from fine art to avant garde. Awarded by large foundations, magazines and museums, grants allow photographers to pursue an individual project rather than a body of work. Potential grantees should allow enough time to create a careful presentation. The pool of applicants is so large that many grantors refuse to consider applications that are haphazard or incomplete.

Humble Arts Foundation New Photography Grant
-
The New York-based Humble Arts Foundation, established in 2005, concentrates on fine-art photography exhibitions and publishing. The New Photography Grant, awarded twice a year, recognizes new or ongoing projects. The straightforward application process requires applicants to submit a short application, brief bio and a resume, which must be in PDF format. The committee accepts exactly 10 photos. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and have a PayPal account. A fee must be submitted with the application if the applicant is not a member of the Humble Arts Foundation.
Alexia Foundation for World Peace Grant-in-Aid
-
The Alexia Foundation, named for a student photojournalist killed in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103, focuses on photography's power to catalog injustice and create social change. The student grant, awarded in undergraduate and graduate categories, pays full tuition for a semester of study in London, and an additional cash grant for completing the project the undergraduate applicant submitted. The foundation also distributes second place awards and awards of excellence. Applicants must submit a proposal for a photo essay, a portfolio of between 10 and 20 photos, and a resume.

FotoVisura Grant for Outstanding Personal Photography Project
-
FotoVisura awards grants in two categories. The grant for outstanding personal photography includes a cash grant, an invitation to publish in Visura Magazine, several photography-related prizes and inclusion in an exhibition. Second and third place awards do not include a cash grant. The grant for outstanding student photography is structured the same way, but the cash grant is smaller. The straightforward application process requires at least one photo, a brief essay and an entry fee, unless the applicant is a member of FotoVisura.
Photocrati Fund Grant for Emerging Photographers
-
The Photocrati Fund awards grants to new photographers who focus on environmental and humanitarian subjects. Applicants must submit a project proposal free of typographical and grammatical errors that explains the project's importance, what tangible benefits the project will create, and the applicant's background in photography. A rough budget, bio and link to an online portfolio of 20 to 30 photos are required. The images must share a theme. Winners are announced at the annual Look3 Festival in Charlottesville, Virginia. The application process isn't limited to individuals --- Photocrati considers teams of photographers applying for the same grant if they deem the project worthwhile.
