Shipping containers come in standard 20- and 40-foot lengths.

A 20-foot shipping container is one of the two standard sizes---along with a 40-foot container---used to ship goods by cargo ship. Train, truck and plane also transport standardized containers. The 20-foot container size is the unit known as TEU, a volume measurement used to classify cargo ships.

  1. Exterior Dimensions

    • The exterior dimensions of a 20-foot container are 20 feet long, 8 feet wide and 8 feet, 6 inches high. There is a high-cube version of the container that has a height of 9 feet, 6 inches, giving an extra foot of exterior and interior height.

    Interior Dimensions

    • The internal dimensions of a 20-foot container are 19 feet, 3 inches long, 7 feet, 7 inches wide and 7 feet, 9 inches high. The door opening for the container is 7 feet, 6 inches wide and 7 feet, 5 inches high. A high-cube, 20-foot container will have an internal height and door opening one foot larger than the standard container.

    Capacities

    • A standard 20-foot container has a volume capacity of 1,160 cubic feet. The high-cube version has a volume of 1,310 cubic feet. The maximum weight of a 20-foot container is 67,200 pounds. An empty container weights 4,850 pounds, leaving a cargo capacity of 63,250 pounds.

    Pallet loading

    • The floor area of a 20-foot container is 150 square feet. A container can accommodate 9 or 10 standard---1 meter-by-1.2 meter---pallets. Pallets can be stacked up to three tiers high. European size pallets of 800 centimeters-by-1,200 centimeters allow the packing of 11 pallets on each tier in a 20-foot container.
