Pizza deliverers average $6.31 and $7.75.

While it may not be the most prestigious career, pizza delivery can provide income to those looking for both part-time and full-time work. Pay for delivery people varies based on experience and location and employer, but being familiar with average wages can prepare you to seek a delivery job.

  1. National Averages

    • PayScale compiled the compensation levels of nearly 500 pizza delivery drivers to find national average pay for the position. Based on this data, an average hourly wage between $6.31 and $7.75 was found. While the low end of this range falls below current minimum wage levels, these wages were acceptable at the time of data collection. PayScale annualized these figures to estimate annual pay range from $15,223 to $20,748 for delivery people working full time.

    Experience

    • Surprisingly, PayScale's compensation research shows that gaining experience as pizza delivery driver has little effect on one's pay. Delivery people with less than one year of experience have an almost identical average wage as those with five to nine years of experience--$6.43 to $7.98. With more than ten years of experience, average pay actually drops, and drivers with twenty or more years of experience have top average wages of only $7.00 (see References 2).

    Location

    • Washington holds a commanding lead in PayScale's state-by-state analysis of pizza delivery pay with a wage range from $8.32 to $9.22. California takes second with hourly rates spanning from $7.91 to $8.57. Illinois, Ohio, and Texas hold the next spots in line (see References 3).

    Employer

    • When it comes to national pizza chains, not every restaurant is created equal. PayScale finds that Pizza Hut is the best place for delivery drivers to work as far as compensation is concerned. Pizza Hut drivers have hourly rates stretching from $7.21 to $10.00. Domino's takes the silver medal with a top average wage at $8.00. Papa John's holds a distant third place with a high-end average at $7.21 (see References 4).
