Pizza delivery drivers earn financial rewards in both part-time and full-time positions.

As both a part-time job and full-time profession, working as a pizza delivery driver can provide substantial income, as well as a host of interesting experiences and on-the-job stories. Wages and salaries for delivery drivers vary based on experience, location, employer and more, so taking a look at average rates before accepting a position can help job seekers know what to expect.

  1. National Averages

    • According to an ongoing survey of pizza delivery drivers conducted by PayScale, hourly wages for the position range from $6.30 to $7.77. These figures are accurate as of December 2010, but because of the ongoing nature of the survey, most averages included in this article lag behind minimum wage regulations. When annualized for a full-time position, PayScale finds an average salary ranging from $15,226 to $20,712.

    Location

    • PayScale's data shows that pizza delivery drivers make the best money in the state of California; average hourly pay ranges from $7.91 to $8.55. Illinois is second in line, with top average pay at $8.14 per hour. Ohio and Michigan take the next slots, with top average pay around $7.50 per hour.

    Employer Type

    • When PayScale annualizes its hourly wage rate survey of delivery drivers, an interesting distinction emerges based on employer type. While large national pizza chains may compete with lower and lower costs, their drivers have significantly higher top average salaries. While the salary range for franchise employees extends to $29,744, it only reaches to $20,159 for those employed by other companies.

    Benefits

    • Those seeking information about average pay for delivery drivers may also be inquisitive about non-cash benefits. Unfortunately, PayScale finds that benefits are few and far between. Only 9 percent of surveyed drivers receive medical coverage from their employers. This number decreases to 4 percent and 3 percent for vision and dental care, respectively.
