Modern home economics, also called family and consumer sciences, involves issues that affect individuals, families and communities, in particular issues related to food, clothing, relationships and the home. Home economic careers include work in child development, food management, fashion, hospitality and interior design.

Child Development

Home economics courses in child development explore theories about how children develop physically, cognitively and socially. These courses can lead to a career in childcare or set a foundation for advanced training in child psychology or other subjects related to children.
Education

Home economics teachers teach students in high schools, vocational and occupational programs, community colleges and other settings about general food preparation and preservation, general nutrition and home-related skills such as cleaning and organization. Extension educators work in the county to educate the public about issues related to food, life skills and the home.

Fashion Design, Manufacturing and Merchandising

People interested in the fashion career path have options that range from entry-level jobs such as fashion design aide or fabrics/accessories estimator; to technical jobs such as fashion illustrator, textile technician or computer imaging consultant; and professional level jobs (such as fashion designer, wardrobe supervisor, fashion artist or fashion merchandising manager.
Food Management

Careers in food management include dietary aide, food product tester, test kitchen food assembler, food and drug inspector, food production chemist, dietitian, food technologist and nutritionist. Careers are also available in food service and related areas.

Home economic careers in the hospitality, tourism, and recreation industry may involve managing facilities and events, doing sales, publicity and financial transactions, working in the travel arena or providing guest services.

Technical careers include display designer, interior design assistant, photo stylist and furnishings buyer. Professional careers include furniture designer, interior designer and set designer.
