West Virginia American Baptist Scholarships

American Baptist Churches USA boasts over 1.3 million members in almost 5,500 congregations around the United States and Puerto Rico. The mission arm of American Baptist Churches, the American Baptist Home Mission Societies, works to give back to the communities where American Baptist congregations reside. One way the organization gives back is through a college and seminary scholarship program. While currently there are no scholarships available specifically for West Virginia American Baptists, West Virginia American Baptist students can apply for one of several general American Baptist scholarships.

  1. Undergraduate Scholarships

    • The undergraduate scholarships from the American Baptist Home Mission Societies are open to any high school senior intending to attend an accredited college or university full-time. Students must be active members of an American Baptist congregation for at least a year prior to applying and must also be a United States citizen. Applications can be found online at the American Baptist website and must be submitted by May 29 each year. Scholarship winners may opt to renew their scholarship each year provided they maintain a 2.75 or higher grade point average. Scholarship amounts vary each year and may be used for tuition costs only.

    Graduate Study Scholarships

    • American Baptist members who intend to pursue graduate studies can also apply for two graduate study scholarships. As of 2010, the Doctoral Grant gives a one-time $3,000 award to an American Baptist member who has completed at least one year of doctoral studies in pursuit of a Ph. D. The applicant "must be intending to teach at the college or seminary level, in a field of study directly related to preparing American Baptist ministerial leaders," according to the Office of Financial Aid for Studies. The Ellen Cushing Scholarship goes to a female graduate student looking to work in human services. Applications for both scholarships are due by May 29 each year and applicants must be active members in an American Baptist congregation and a United States citizen.

    Individual Seminarian Grants

    • Seminarian students who choose to attend a school not affiliated with American Baptist Churches USA can apply for an individual seminarian grant. As of 2010, to be eligible for the $750 grant, the applicant must be an active member of an American Baptist church for at least one year prior to applying, must be attending an accredited seminary school in the United States or Puerto Rico and must be a United States citizen. Students must also be enrolled at least two-thirds time in the seminary and applications are due by May 29 each year.

    Seminarian Support Program

    • For American Baptist members attending an American Baptist-sponsored seminary, the Seminarian Support Program provides seminary tuition money. The program matches the student's local congregation's contributions up to $1,000, in 2010. Applicants must be enrolled at least two-thirds time and must be resident students at the seminary they attend. Applications can be obtained directly from the seminary and must be returned by August 1 each year.
