Children can receive quality medical care at little or no cost to parents.

Low-income families in Alabama can receive assistance from federally funded programs. The programs can help cover the costs of medical care, provide housing assistance or help purchase food. Families can even receive help with locating a job and child care. Interested families can submit applications for the programs at a local Alabama Department of Human Resources office unless noted otherwise.

  1. Medicaid

    • Medicaid provides medical assistance to low-income families in Alabama. Children 18 years of age and younger are eligible for the program. Parents of minor children, pregnant women and recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) are also eligible. The program covers inpatient and outpatient hospital visits, doctor visits and prescription drugs. The program is overseen by the Alabama Medicaid Agency. Depending on your income, the program may require a copayment for covered services under the program

    Food Assistance Program

    • The Food Assistance Program provides Alabama families with monthly assistance with purchasing food. FA is Alabama's federally funded food stamps program. The assistance comes in the form of an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card that participants can use at any authorized dealer that displays a "Quest" logo. Families are required to meet the federal income guidelines, which depend on the federal poverty levels. A family may qualify for expedited services if their monthly income is $150 or less.

    Family Assistance Program

    • The Family Assistance Program provides temporary cash assistance, job training and child care assistance to qualified families. Job training takes place in partnership with the Alabama Department of Labor. Child care assistance helps parents who are working or currently enrolled in school. Parents can enroll their children in a child care facility of their choice and only be responsible for a copayment. Alabama places a limit of five years on program participants unless there are extenuating circumstances such as disability.

    Section 8

    • Low-income Alabama families in need of housing assistance can apply for Section 8. Alabama public housing authorities (PHAs) administer this federally funded program. The program provides a voucher that families can use to cover up to 70 percent of the rent of a privately owned or government-owned residence. Families can obtain and submit applications at their nearest PHA. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development provides a list of PHAs within Alabama.
