Salary of a Personal Shopper

With more retail organizations providing their customers with personal shopping services, people who don't possess fashion sense can still dress to the nines. Personal shoppers, also known as fashion consultants and image consultants, aid shoppers in making wardrobe decisions in confidence. Although most personal shoppers are employed by retail agencies, some provide services as part of fashion consultant companies that help their clients develop an up-to-date image and wardrobe.

  1. Average Salary

    • Personal shoppers' income varies greatly by the store that employs them, with upscale stores frequently offering larger salaries than ones with lower budgets. The median salary for personal shoppers ranges from $30,000 to $57,500 annually as of November 2010, according to State University.

    Hourly Wages

    • As with many retail positions, many personal shoppers are employed on an hourly wage basis. Just as average annual salaries vary greatly, so do hourly wages. As of November 2010, personal shoppers can expect to earn from $10.45 to $24.30 per hour, according to Payscale. These earnings might be supplemented with commission earnings. Commission amounts range from $2,948 to $22,382 per year, depending upon the amount of merchandise sold, commission rates and the prices of clothing sold.

    Personal Shoppers as Style Consultants

    • Personal shoppers who aren't employed by retailers provide their services to clients as fashion consultants. These personal shoppers talk with their clients, develop an understanding of what they require and then purchase wardrobes to suit the recently revamped image. These shoppers command hourly rates that vary from $20 to $2,000, according to "Seventeen" magazine, although many work hours that aren't directly billable to clients.

    Benefits

    • As with all other aspects of personal shoppers' average compensation packages, benefits vary greatly from position to position. Roughly half of all personal shoppers receive some form of medical plan as part of their employment as of November 2010, according to Payscale, and 37 percent enjoy dental coverage. Only 23 percent are offered vision insurance as part of their compensation agreement.
