Based on a survey of 477 dietary aides, PayScale calculates an average salary range from $16,560 to $21,737. This range is annualized from hourly wage rates ranging from $7.91 to $10.11. PayScale's reports for dietary aides are accurate as of November 2010.

PayScale's survey shows that dietary aides in Michigan have the highest pay: hourly rates in the state span from $8.20 to $12.13. Massachusetts is also a high-ranking state, with top hourly rates at $12.10. Pennsylvania and California are next on the state-by-state breakdown, each with top wages above $10 per hour, as of 2010.

With hourly wages ranging from $8.09 to $11.06, employees of state and local government agencies are the highest-paid dietary aides according to PayScale. Those working for private practices have wages spanning from $8.23 to $10.78. Dietary aides working at hospitals, on the other hand, make between $7.98 and $10.99 per hour.

Since many dietary aides are part-time or hourly employees, health coverage is not a guarantee and job seekers should have realistic expectations about benefits. According to PayScale, only 43 percent of aides have medical coverage from their employers. Dental care is given to 33 percent and 26 percent receive vision care as of 2010.
