Tablets are a useful tool for graphic designers.

Graphic designers use visual techniques such as photography, illustration, color and typography to communicate ideas in print, promotional displays, websites, packaging and signs. A bachelor's degree is typically needed. Graphic designers must educate themselves constantly on rapidly advancing design methods and technologies. They typically need one to three years of experience before advancing to higher positions.

  1. Conditions

    • Graphic designers work in well-lighted and climate-controlled offices at businesses and organizations. Those that work for themselves at home, or in private offices try to replicate a comfortable working environment as well. Part-timers make a median hourly wage of $20.76 as of May 2009, states the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Wages can go as low as $12.71 or as high as $36.75.

    Workplaces

    • The workplaces boasting the most graphic designer jobs are specialized designer services, which contract out to other companies to perform designs. They comprise almost 14 percent of the total 200,870 jobs. Hourly rates are better than average at $24.17. The best-paying jobs are with the federal government, whose part-timers fill in during busy periods. The government pays $35.59 but only offers less than 1 percent of the total jobs in this field.

    Locations

    • Graphic design positions and pay vary by location, with the District of Columbia offering the highest concentration of workers with 2.4 positions per thousand workers. Washington D.C. also offers the highest salaries at $32.74. For urban areas, the best concentration is found in San Francisco, San Mateo and Redwood City in California. The job concentration there is 3.4 positions per thousand, and the area also offers the highest salaries at $35.90.

    Job Future

    • The BLS predicts graphic design jobs to grow by 13 percent from 2008 to 2018, which is as fast as average for all occupations. This should also provide an average increase in compensation. Demand will come from advertisers and computer design firms who create interactive media projects for websites, mobile phones and other emerging technologies. However, competition will be fierce because many talented artists are attracted to the profession. Those with a background in liberal arts, marketing and business management will have the best opportunities.
